Ebalem Data Tracking Policy

At Ebalem, we know that privacy is a big deal—especially when you’re learning online. This document explains how we collect and use data about your experience, the tools and methods we use to track activity, and your options for managing what we collect. We’ve tried to write this in a way that’s easy to follow, even if you’re not a tech expert. You’ll find lots of detail below, but if you ever have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Our goal is to give you a clear picture of the technologies behind the scenes—cookies, beacons, pixels, and more—so you can make informed decisions. We encourage you to read every section, since your rights and choices are woven throughout the policy. Everything in here is tailored to the unique needs and challenges of an online education platform, where your trust is as important as your progress.

Purpose of Our Tracking Methods

Technology keeps our platform running smoothly, but it’s more than that—it shapes your experience, keeps your data safe, and helps us support your learning. When we talk about tracking, we mean the tools we put in place to remember your choices, see how you use the site, and personalize your educational journey. Most of these methods involve storing tiny bits of data in your browser or device, which allows our website to remember who you are, what you like, and what you need next time you visit. Sometimes this data is kept just for one session, and other times it sticks around for a few weeks or months—depending on the function.

Let’s start with the essentials. Without some of these tracking methods, the website would barely work. For example, we use session cookies to remember that you’re logged in as you move from lesson to lesson. If you were kicked out every time you clicked a link, learning would be a nightmare. Another piece—security tokens—keep your account safe by making sure nobody else can pretend to be you while you’re busy reviewing flashcards or writing essays. And, for things like remembering your language preference or the last page you visited, we need persistent cookies that hang around between visits.

Analytics are a whole other universe. These methods collect information—like which videos get watched all the way through, which quizzes stump people, and how many students open their assignments on a mobile device. We gather things like page views, time spent on tasks, and navigation patterns. All of this gets rolled up into reports that help us figure out what’s working and what needs fixing. For example, if we notice lots of learners dropping off at the same spot in a course, we know exactly where to dig in and improve.

Functional technologies help us put you at the center of your own learning universe. Ever seen a message that pops up to remind you of an unfinished lesson? Or found that your dashboard always shows your favorite courses first? That’s tracking at work—making the platform more personal and less generic. We use these tools to store your settings, keep track of your progress, and even suggest new topics you might like, based on what you’ve already explored.

Personalization and customization are where things get more interesting. Sometimes, we use information about your activities—like which subjects you spend time on—to recommend content or resources you’ll find most useful. For example, if you’re always checking out coding tutorials, our system might highlight new programming courses on your homepage. This means you see less clutter and more of what actually helps you learn.

All these technologies work together as one big ecosystem. For example, cookies might remember your login, local storage might keep a draft of your essay, and analytics scripts might track which materials you use most. Together, they create a seamless learning experience that’s responsive, secure, and uniquely yours.

Restrictions

Your data belongs to you, and you have rights when it comes to how it’s collected and used. Laws like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other privacy rules give you the power to see, correct, or delete your personal information. If you’re based in a region with additional laws—like the California Consumer Privacy Act—you may have extra rights, such as the ability to opt out of certain data uses. We’re committed to respecting these frameworks and making it easy for you to exercise your choices.

Most browsers let you control cookies and other tracking methods right from the settings menu. In Chrome, for example, you can go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and Other Site Data to block or delete cookies. Firefox users can find similar tools under Preferences > Privacy & Security. Safari hides its controls under Preferences > Privacy. If you’re using Edge, look for Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions. It’s usually just a couple of clicks, but every browser is a bit different, so you might want to check for the latest instructions online if you get stuck.

On top of browser settings, we also offer our own privacy controls. Our preference center lets you review which types of cookies and trackers you want to allow. You can adjust these from your account dashboard—just look for the privacy or data preferences section. If you’re not sure what each category means, we provide detailed descriptions to help you decide.

Turning off different categories of trackers can have real effects. For example, if you block essential cookies, you might not be able to log in or save your progress. Disabling analytics means we won’t know where users get stuck, so we might miss opportunities to improve tough parts of a course. Rejecting functional cookies can stop us from remembering your settings or showing you personalized recommendations—meaning you could lose some of the convenience that makes online learning easier.

If you want to boost privacy without breaking the site, you can use browser add-ons or privacy tools that block most third-party trackers but allow basic site functionality. Some tools let you whitelist Ebalem so you keep key features while blocking trackers from others. We test compatibility with several of these tools, so you can usually find a setup that protects your privacy without locking you out.

We encourage you to weigh your options. Think about which features matter most to you and how much personalization you want. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—just the balance that feels right for your learning style and privacy needs.

Other Important Information

We don’t keep your data forever. For things like analytics, we typically hold on to information for no more than 24 months, after which it’s deleted or anonymized. Essential account data—like your username or course progress—sticks around as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we start a process to erase your personal data within 30 days, except where we’re required by law to keep certain records.

Security is something we take seriously—probably more than you realize. We use encrypted connections (HTTPS) for everything, store passwords with strong hashing algorithms, and restrict access to sensitive data only to team members who absolutely need it. Regular audits, security training, and up-to-date software patches are all part of our routine to keep your information safe. We’ve also got monitoring tools in place to alert us if anything suspicious happens.

Sometimes, we combine data collected through tracking with other sources, like your registration details or feedback surveys. For example, if you tell us you’re struggling with a particular topic, we might look at your usage data to find patterns and suggest resources. This helps us give you better support and spot trends across the entire learning community.

Staying on the right side of privacy laws is a moving target, but we’re always updating our practices to match the latest requirements. We follow frameworks like GDPR, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and others that apply to our users. This means we regularly review our policies, train our staff, and document our compliance efforts.

We pay special attention to younger users. Extra safeguards—like stricter data minimization and parental consent—are in place for anyone under the age of 16. We also avoid collecting unnecessary details from younger students and make sure they (or their guardians) understand what’s being collected and why.

External Providers

Sometimes, we work with outside companies to make Ebalem more useful, secure, and reliable. These partners might provide things like payment processing, customer support, analytics, or content delivery. We carefully select each partner and only allow those who meet strict privacy and security standards.

  • Some partners help process payments, which means they collect billing details, transaction records, and sometimes even device information to prevent fraud. For instance, when you buy a course, your payment provider might store your card’s last four digits, your billing address, and your purchase history. This allows purchases to go through smoothly and securely.
  • Analytics and marketing partners gather data like your device type, browser version, IP address, and browsing behavior. This helps us see which resources are most popular and where students might be having trouble. They may also track how you interact with emails or notifications we send, so we can measure whether our communication is helpful or needs to change.
  • Some content partners might collect data about which videos or interactive elements you access, to make sure the right materials load for your region or device. For example, a video streaming provider may briefly store your location to deliver the best quality stream or to comply with licensing restrictions.
  • You have choices about what data these partners collect. In most cases, you’ll see a pop-up or settings menu that lets you block certain external services. For example, you can turn off non-essential analytics in your privacy settings or use browser extensions that block third-party scripts.
  • We never share your personal data with partners unless it’s absolutely necessary and we have a signed agreement in place. Each provider is required to keep your data confidential and secure, and we regularly check that they’re living up to their promises. We also use technical measures—like anonymization or encryption—to limit what partners can see.

Other Methods

Not everything happens through cookies. We use web beacons and pixels—tiny, transparent images that load when you visit a page or open an email. These tools quietly record information like when you view a lesson, which device you’re on, and how you interact with certain features. They don’t store data on your device, but they do send information back to our servers for things like open rates or feature testing.

Local storage and session storage are like digital notepads in your browser. Local storage lets us keep things like your theme preferences or recently viewed lessons, so they’re ready next time you log in. This data stays until you clear your browser or we update the software. Session storage, on the other hand, is short-lived—it vanishes as soon as you close your browser window. We use it for things like quiz answers or temporary drafts, so you don’t lose your work if you accidentally refresh the page.

Device recognition helps us spot familiar logins and prevent fraud. We may use a mix of browser fingerprints, device IDs, or hardware information (like screen resolution) to confirm it’s really you each time you sign in. This helps keep your account secure without always forcing you through extra authentication steps.

On the server side, we collect access logs and metadata every time you use the platform. These records include things like IP address, request times, and error messages, which help us troubleshoot issues and protect against attacks. Server logs are stored securely and only accessible by authorized staff.

You can control most of these methods. For example, you can clear local and session storage from your browser’s developer tools, or use privacy settings to block web beacons and pixels. If you’re not sure how to manage these, our help center has step-by-step guides, or you can reach out for support.

Policy Updates

We don’t just set this policy and forget about it. Every year—at a minimum—we review the whole document to spot anything that’s out of date or could be clearer. If there’s a big change in the law, or if we add new features that affect how we collect data, we’ll update this policy right away. Sometimes, we even tweak it in response to your feedback.

When we make major changes—like adding new types of tracking, or changing what data we collect—we’ll let you know. We do this by posting a notice on our homepage, sending an email, or showing a message when you log in. You’ll always have at least 30 days’ notice before changes take effect, unless it’s something urgent for security or legal reasons.

If you ever need to see what changed, we keep copies of previous versions. Just ask our support team and we’ll send you a copy of the policy as it stood on any given date. We believe transparency builds trust, so we’re happy to share that history.

Not every edit is a big deal. If we fix typos, clarify language, or reorganize sections without changing the core meaning, we don’t send out special notices. But if we start collecting new types of information or give partners more access, that’s the kind of significant change you’ll definitely hear about from us.
